Born Murderer

Katarzyna Bonda

What caused a plan for revenge to be hatched in a sick mind? Why did a well-known businessman have to die? Katarzyna Bonda gets the reader involved in a sophisticated game in which we can find everything that a perfect detective story should have: blood, madness and carefully hidden secrets. A luxury car burns down in the riverside scrubland. In its wreckage, the police find the partially charred corpse of a man. The victim has gunshot wounds to his abdomen and his head wrapped in a coat. Although one has to wait for the DNA test results, all the evidence is that it was Rui Coelho Tavares de Souza – a prosperous Portuguese businessman – who lost his life. The first clues lead to de Souza’s associates. But the circle of suspects widens considerably when the police get a ‘list of adulteresses’, i.e. a list of dozens of women who were involved in close relations with the businessman. The police ask Hubert Meyer for support. The profiler has no doubt that the crime happened under the influence of strong emotions. It was a personal vendetta. Did the husband of one of the mistresses exact justice on his own? What other secrets does the de Souza family hide? Another body is consumed by fire soon. The profiler is sure that a ruthless murderer has just been born who will not stop until he has crowned his work.... Katarzyna Bonda scales the heights! She knows perfectly how to build up tension to shock the reader. ‘Born Murderer’ is a story of betrayal, revenge and manipulation, all of which prove deadly in too large a dose!

The Woman in the Suitcase

Katarzyna Bonda

Provocation? Recklessness? Or the sick amusement of a psychopath? Peaceful neighbourhoods can be treacherous. When the ‘missing Klaudia Janus’ posters hanging on poles and pillars have long since faded and the local police have lost faith in solving the case, a macabre discovery is made. On the exit road from Ełk, a random driver finds a blue suitcase with the remains of a young woman and a gold necklace with a leaf. The same one Klaudia used to wear. According to investigators’ findings, the body was in the water for a long time, buried and partially burnt. And this effectively makes it difficult to identify the victim. So why did the murderer finally decide that the woman in the suitcase should be found? Hubert Meyer is called in to help with the investigation, but he is in custody awaiting his own trial. A police officer, Grzegorz Kaczmarek, is seconded from the Warsaw Investigation Support Department. He has no doubt that a local resident is responsible for the young woman’s disappearance. The suspects are many. Each of them has a motive. All of them conceal the most relevant facts. And it is still unclear whose hands are stained with blood. The claustrophobic atmosphere and air thickens when it comes to light that Klaudia was not the only girl who disappeared without a trace in this seemingly peaceful neighbourhood. Seven years earlier, a young tourist had been abducted from the beach. Her personal details have never been established. All that is known is that on the day she went missing, she wore a gold chain with a leaf around her neck... Katarzyna Bonda’s latest detective story absorbs you completely! Until the very end, it is unclear who cares about uncovering the truth, and who is lying through their teeth. If you have read ‘The Woman in the Suitcase’, reaching for the next parts of the series with investigative psychologist Hubert Meyer will be a mere formality!

Cold case

Katarzyna Bonda

This is the strangest and most terrifying investigation Hubert Meyer has been involved in.
In the basement of a historic villa in Sołacz, Poznań, the police has discovered bodies of a woman and three children. The very peculiar manner of the burial indicates a ritual murder. For years the residents of this house had been considered missing (the cold case). The investigators are searching for the father of the murdered family – Gustaw Garbarczyk, who, according to unconfirmed information, was a member of a sect.
After the shooting at Narew, Hubert Meyer does not have a clear conscience. To forget about his sense of guilt, he dives into work. The experienced profiler is tasked with creating an Investigative Support Division. The trailblazing unit attracts the smartest detectives from across the country. One of them – aspirant Grzegorz Kaczmarek – is personally involved in the Garbarczyk family disappearance case. He was acquainted with Gustaw and does not believe in his guilt. He asks Hubert for help in solving the mystery of the massacre in Sołacz.
When the profilers arrive in Poznań, it turns out that this is just the tip of the iceberg of puzzles. The sister of the wanted Gustaw Garbarczyk receives a package with severed hands. The mysterious religious gathering that unites all the victims turns out to be a kind of a syndicate. Meyer and Kaczmarek face a wall of silence while more witnesses die in ritual cocoons.
Can the profiler bring this case to a conclusion when the interrogated would rather die than reveal the truth?

The Barber

Katarzyna Bonda

Along with the last drop that flowed from the child’s vein,
HE was born. The Barber from Narew.
Meyer decides to retreat into the woods of the Podlasie region. He is looking for a momentary respire in a small village of Narew. However, life has something else in store for him. The residents of this seemingly peaceful and desolate area have just been shaken by a series of extremely bloody – one might say even theatrical – crimes.

A body is found in St. Hubert's chapel in the middle of the woods. Tymek, a several-year-old son of the local femme fatale has been killed. Everything looks as if the boy had been sacrificed as an offering. At the same time a gunshot is fired in a snow-covered forest glade surrounded by a dense thicket. Although shot from a distance, it immediately takes the life of Father Donat Giza – a keen hunter, an active member of the hunting club and an important member of the local community.

Both incidents are most gruesome and the profiler is convinced that the crimes are only a prelude to the spectacle arranged by the murderer, hailed by the media as “The Barber from Narew”.

Meyer faces an extremely challenging task. He has to draw up a psychological profile of the criminal, breaking through the thicket of connections between the residents of Narew, who are bound together by unclear interests, dark secrets, and, above all – a conspiracy of silence. Everyone here is aware of what occurred in the village. However, people prefer to remain silent.

The cycle of madness closes when another body is found. Gradually it becomes clear that there are only two roles to play in this bloody spectacle. Either you fight like a predator or you become the prey.

Cage for the Innocents

Katarzyna Bonda

Forty-three stabs with a knife. This is how Róża Englot died. Apart from open wounds on her body, the murderer left one more piece of evidence – a key. Incidentally, when Róża’s husband – convicted of the brutal murder – finishes serving his sentence, another tragedy strikes at the Warsaw tenement house.
In mysterious circumstances, Englot's mother-in-law falls out of a seventh floor balcony and dies instantly. Soon it turns out that the incident took place when Englot was out on furlough. However, no hard, incriminating evidence can be found.
Weronika Rudy asks Hubert Meyer to come to Warsaw and conduct an expert examination. As the profiler delves into the details of the incident, he discovers that in order to get to the bottom of it all, it may be necessary to investigate a case of disappearance which occurred 17 years earlier.
Will Meyer manage to stop the murderer before yet another person dies? What was Róża Englot not supposed to reveal? Had the object on her body been left as a warning?
When Hubert is merely a step away from uncovering the truth, the case takes a surprising turn. So far, he has been helping the victims and tracking down criminals. Now he is the prime suspect...

Nobody Needs to Know

Katarzyna Bonda

They didn’t fulfill his fantasies and paid in blood.
Will Hubert Meyer break the law to save his friend?
Just him, the TV, and lots of tequila. This is how Hubert Meyer decides to spend his thirteen-day vacation. However, this plan will fail. An unknown woman starts harassing him with bizarre text messages; soon after, he receives an unannounced visit from police officers together with prosecutor Weronika Rudy.
Six months earlier, one of them had shot Japa, a dangerous gangster. To save the policeman from the possible punishment, Meyer is to produce an expert report that will put investigation on the wrong track. What is needed, however, is a ‘cover’, a surrogate case which investigators will officially work on.
They choose the murder in Moszna, where the mutilated body of a young boy was discovered on the road leading to the castle. As Meyer and Rudy try to discover the identity of the perpetrator, more crimes follow. The investigators are interviewing new witnesses, but the trail keeps breaking off. Conflicts are raging behind the walls of the old castle. This will be the most difficult and risky investigation in Meyer’s career.
